The problem could lead to difficulties with the power steering, CNN reported Wednesday.
The recall includes 2001-2003 model year Prius cars, about 52,000 of which were sold in the United States.
Toyota said repairs, offered free of charge, would take about 4 hours to complete and that it would send letters out to Prius owners in early July.
